Many years in the past, this city held a significant amount of power and stimulated the creation of impressive architectural feats, such as the Borobudur and Prambanan temples between the 8th and 9th centuries. Subsequently, it had a significant impact on the formation of the dominant Mataram kingdom throughout the 16th and 17th centuries.
The contribution of Yogyakarta was crucial in the fight for the independence of Indonesia. From 1946 to 1948, Yogyakarta served as the capital of the Republic of Indonesia. Due to the major role in upholding the Republic of Indonesia, Yogyakarta was granted special autonomy status as a district, affording it the unique distinction of being the sole region in Indonesia led by a recognized monarchy with a sultan still in power. Jogja is recognized with the slogan “Jogja Istimewa”, highlighting its distinctive qualities. Thus, Yogyakarta has become one of Indonesia’s top tourist spots for its abundance of attractions waiting to be discovered.

Established during the initial phase of independence, Universitas Gadjah Mada was designated as the preeminent hub for academic and cultural pursuits under the national higher education system. The initial lectures were conducted within the premises of the Kraton Palace, utilizing the available venues in Yogyakarta. At present, Universitas Gadjah Mada consists of 18 faculties, a graduate school, a vocational school, covering various study programs.
